A couple weeks back, I had the chance to speak with James Blake on the phone for about 20 minutes. I’d been trying to arrange this interview since meeting him at the Portishead show in LA back in 2011, so I was elated to have it finally come together.
Though he comes off as somewhat distant in-person, Blake is a gifted conversationalist and a voracious consumer of music. At several points in the interview, particularly when discussing Outkast, he stopped himself from completely nerding out by saying “I could go on all day.” It reminded me of something a friend would say in one of our heated music geek conversations.
Considering that aspect, I felt lucky to be doing the interview for my friend’s site Passion of the Weiss, which I consider to be one of the last great refuges for electronic and hip-hop obsessives. In our interview, Blake discusses performing with the RZA, the legacy of Christopher Hitchens and plans for his new label 1-800-Dinosaur. It’s one of my favorites.

Here’s my profile of comedienne Chelsea Peretti from LA Weekly’s 2013 People Issue. Chelsea has written for Portlandia, Parks and Recreation, SNL and Kroll Show and is an amazingly talented stand-up in her own right. Check out her bizarrely fascinating podcast Call Chelsea Peretti. You won’t regret it.
